finally found the time and energy to upload all the pictures..
yup~~ we went Langkawi and Penang..
23 of us in our various means of travel got to our destination--Langkawi Island..
me, JiaHuan, WenWei, ChuJin and AiLing went by plane on Tuesday morning..
come to think of it.. it was really a frustrating experience..
we booked a taxi from a local company beforehand..
in the end, we waited.. and waited.. and waited..
but it never came..
in the end, we had to secure a nearby taxi to get to LCCT in time..

finally~~
the end of the terror + stress + exhaustion-filled End-of-Semester Examinations!
no more late night revisions!
no more studying in IMU more than 15hrs a day!!

and it's hello~~ to sunshine, beach and sea!
went to Langkawi and Penang with my beloved batchmates from ND108..
will blog about it in the next post.. caution:: there will be a lot photos!!

anyway..
right after i handed in my last paper -- Introductory Psychology.. i was immediately relieved!!
it's time for some relaxation..
went to Taman OUG to get some food..
and we headed straight towards midvalley..
why?? to watch the long anticipated 2012~~
but i guess we weren't in luck, all slots were full!!
so some smart guy suggested we watch Phobia2..
and we did..
let's not go into detail about the movie..
i've always avoided horror films..
so, i guess it's quite explainatory of how much of the movie i've actually opened my eyes and watched it..

after the movie.. we headed straight to the next destination..
Wings Music Cafe, Kuchai Lama..
been longing to go there again all study break...
it's a truly nice and comfortable place to unwind and slowly release the stress..
the performers of the night was 子荧 and 伟豪..
liked 子荧's voice a lot =) *thumbs up!!*
heard a lot of nice songs..
it's a wonder how nice acoustic music sounds..
which reminds me.. i will practice my guitar during this semester break!!
we stayed till the end of the performances and finally headed back home..

stayed tuned.. it's sunshine, sea and sandy beaches next~~

kayy.. just a random post.. or should i say a pictorial representation of how i spent these few weeks..

first up.. "Healthy Weight, Healthy Life" Health Wellness Workshop.. organized by the N&D dept of IMU..
me and LiXian volunteered to help out in the Nutrition Assessment & Healthy Screening session~
we basically do what we do best..
measuaring their weight and height.. computing BMI..
measuring their % body fat using BIA..
waist cirumference and interpretation of the results..
we were joined by a few other volunteers from BP106.. nice getting to know u guys ya~

anyway, it was quite a great opportunity..
many turned up..
i find a few of the activities througout the day very facinating..
there's talks on different ways of maintaining a healthy weight -- diet & exercise, medication & supplements, surgery..
self monitoring of weight and health..
health behavior changes..
and the most interactive would be the afternoon sessions..
there was cooking demonstrations, exercise training and also behavioral change counseling..

and there was the study break...
hmmmm.. i would say this was the worst in all my 3 semesters in IMU..
imagine staying in uni up till 12am..
the notes that i have to go throught.. facts to remember..
it was really overwelming!
seriously.. and with 3 weeks of study break.. u would think we would have had time to revised everything..
but, omg!!! i still can't remember everything..
well.. as my mum said.. i've got to learn to let go sometimes...

day 4 :: Nutrients and Metabolism.. *speechless!!!* went to 金啤梨, Sri Petaling to indulge.. and forget the dissappointment

day 5 :: Pathophysiology and Clinical Management for Diseases.. felt betrayed.. anyway.. went for dinner in TaiYang太阳, Kuchai Lama..

one more paper left.. Introductory Psychology..

even though it's study week..
i did get a breath of fresh air..
a change of scenery.. meeting new people.. experiencing new situations..
yes! u've got it right! i went as a volunteer for the World Osteoporosis Day..
organized by the Osteoporosis Awareness Society Kuala Lumpur, the 3-day event held in Sunway Pyramid was really happening!
hahaha... many many thanks to Dr Winnie for letting us have this chance of being part of all this..
so.. here goes..

this year's theme:: HEALTHY BONES FOR LIFE!

so, u might wanna know.. what exactly do we do as a volunteer??

we assist the public in completing the IOF One-Minute Osteoporosis Risk Test..

explain.. explain.. explain..

we measure their Height and Weight.. and calculate their BMI..

we do a ultrasound bone scan on them..

finally we introduce them to this Osteoporosis Self-Assessment Tool for Asians (OSTA)..
and.. interpret all the readings, results, etc.. educate them on Osteoporosis.. basic lifestyle changes for healthy bones.. dietary advice on maintaining bone health..

anyway, this part was where i spent most of my time there in the 2 days that i attended..
learned a whole lot about how to talk to the public..
how to convey the message to someone who does not have any knowledge on nutrition..
how to counsel people with different language.. believe or not, i actually had to use hokkien and cantonese too.. besides the basic English, Malay and Chinese..
how to apply what i learned from the textbooks into everyday situations..
what amazed me was the different people that turned up..
i was truly inspired by some of them..
how i hope i would actually be half as active as some of them when i am their age..

there were also some funny experience too..
like the time where a direct sales person came and tried to convince me that his product is better for bone health...
the next time u wanna promote your product..
please don't tell me that your product is "99.99% better absoption than food sources"..
and you might wanna get your facts right, calmodulin is a calcium transporter.. not a form of calcium okayy?? ..
besides, did you know that there's many types of calcium supplements out there? they are not all the same lah!
so this would be the people that i would be up against in future..
these people are speaking ever so convincingly.. and yet, spreading all kinds of food faddism and dietary myths around..
how dangerous would it be for the public, with these direct sales people contaminating them with all kinds of bullshit and non-evidence-based facts..
makes me worry sometimes..

anyway, even though i did get an acute sore throat after the whole event..
nothing some good old herbal tea can't cure..
i wanna say i had a great time..
and yes, i hope to be a part of similar events in future..
oops! did i mention that we are being paid RM100/day?? hahahaha..

it's our final practical for Principles of Food Preparation...
can you believe it? it's been 12 practicals already..
time really flies when u're having fun huh??
and i seriously dun mean the times when we are preparing reports for this module..

anyway, it'a all about healthy cooking..
modifiying the common delicacies in Malaysia from their original recipe..
to a more healthy version.. and yet still maintaining the original taste and palatibility of the dish..
how??
here's a few tips::
1. bake instead of fry, roast instead of grill, steam instead of stir fry..
2. use less salt or msg, make use of the different spices available..
3. use less oil, if u have to, at least use cooking oils that are high in PUFAs and Omega3 or Omega6..
4. never exclude an essential ingredient from the original recipe.. dilute it instead..
5. remove excessive fat or skin from the meat..
6. add some veggies or cereals for fibre..
7. colour ur dishes with coloured veggies and fruits for antioxidants..
and there's so much more u can do or try!

as anticipated in the previous post..
a nightmare week has just passed..
Principles of Food Preparation came and gone..
for some, it was Food Prep and Nutrition Assessment test on the same day..
for me.. one of the "lucky" ones in group B..
i got Pathophysiology and Nutrition on the same day..
to top that.. i have Microbiology on the next day!

seriously.. we've really got to talk to IMU about this..
4 tests in 3 days??
even if u have all the time mangement skills in this world..
u would still have 4 times the stress ok??
felt like i was walking lifelessly around IMU.. like a zombie..
it's like.. yippie~ food prep class test's over.. what next? oh.. pathophysiology...
WenYi.. don't hate me for saying this again ya.. i got the CUTE, NUTRIPRO guy as my subject!!
hahahaha...
it was great working with him.. nice personality.. best of all.. friendly and helpful..

i will not mention anything further on the depressing tests.. XD
the minute we stepped out of the Microbiology Practical Exam.. we started planning our mini-celebration..
not to really celebrate of course.. but just to finally get a breath of fresh air..
away.. away from the depressing IMU..

ok.. this is wayyy outdated..
but i have a very good reason for late posts okay?
it's been crazy!!

so.. back to the point.. how did i spend my Raya break?
no.. i did not go back to my hometown.. sob sob.. miss my family...
no.. i didn't get the chance to go for a trip...
then what have i been doing??

joined the 第十三屆中南馬慈青生活營"年輕的愛，綻放" as a member of 衣住组..
it was a very very nice experience..
had the greatest time ever! u guys really rock~~!!
although it was really very tiring..
had to wake up 4.30am each morning to get ready in order to be ready at our respective posts..
and what are our jobs??
hmm.. we distribute uniforms.. we clean the washrooms.. we get the bedrooms ready.. we arrange the blankets and pillows orderly..
sounds easy?? not at all.. try it our for urself..
but... what's great was all the really really cute members of my group..
even though when we were busy folding and catergorizing the uniforms.. or even when we were cleaning the bathrooms.. u guys still manage to bring a smile to my face~
the other 功能组s did really great too..

and it's a temporary, extremely short break for us..
and how can we miss the chance to relax and destress a bit right?
went to the usual meditation class.. by the way it's every wednesday, 7.30pm.. everyone is welcomed ya..

and the atmosphere was really amazing.. *i've used like.. many "really"s so i guess u guys get the idea of how much i enjoyed it =P*

really great guitar skills.. how i wish i could play as good as that one day..
anyway.. guys that play guitars are really attractive ok? not in terms of looks maybe.. but it's the talent that is really amazing~

it's down to the last few food preparation practicals...
gonna miss the times and fun we had in the ND kitchen.. =)
well, despite having our Nutrients and Metabolism class test the next day..
we still had fun..
it's a practical on soup and thickeners..
each group had to prepare a stock (veggie/chicken/beef).. and also a soup from the stock..
my group got to do beef stock + beef consomme..
let's just say it's very interesting..

i've never ever touched raw beef before all my life..
it's probably because my family doesn't take beef..
not that it's some kind of religion restriction of course..
it's just not our dietary habit to take beef..
so my 1ST TIME of handling beef was yesterday..
no offence to you beef lovers.. but raw beef stinks!! my opinion anyway..
ewwwwww...
and the scum and foam removed during the preparation of the stock..
i dun even wanna remember it..

it was 1 hour of simmering..
for us.. 1 hour of flipping though notes.. *to pass time.. class test the next day lar weyy*
checking every few minutes and removing the scum..
have people reserving the leftover beef.. will go into detail later.. =P
and of course the usual joking and playing around..

and it was time to prepare the beef consomme..
for your information.. it is a clear beef soup..
it's so clear that it is actually supposed to resemble the colour of green tea when it's done..
chopped and minced beef + thyme + celery + onions + spring onions + tomato puree..
and the mixture was simmered in the cooled stock from before.. which, by the way was not enough ( =______= )lll
and it was another 1 hour++ of waiting..
and the leftover beef from the stock preparation..
here's what happened to it..

stir-fried beef with tomatoes, onions.. and i dunno what else..
and it tasted really nice!!
compliments to the chefs -- Eugene and Georgen.. u guys rock!
and here's the beef consomme.. still in the process...

the secret ingredient -- egg white.. that binds all the scum and impurities..
see the brownish stuff floating on the soup.. it's egg white protein and some minced beef and stuff..
it took forever for all the minced ingredients to finally float to the surface of the soup..

the final product.. crystal clear beef consomme.. unbelievable right?

it's week 11 tomorrow..
which means...
4 more weeks and my semester 3 is over!!!
omg.. time really does flies this semester..

anyway, some updates on my life..
u guys probably noticed that i seldom update my blog recently..
what can i say, there's not really a lot of interesting and happy stuff going on..
classtests.. hmm don't even mention them.. let's just say.. not as i've predicted anyway..
nutrition status assessment practicals was interseting though..
had our lab on biochemical tests and dietary assessment..
pricked myself and did the blood glucose and cholesterol test..
a new experience i guess.. it's always been the nurse pricking my finger and taking my blood before blood donation.. and i got to do it on myself..
and we had to weigh everything we ate for 3 days..
EVERYTHING!!
that means we have to weigh them separately before we eat.. and also the leftovers..
okayy.. i sounded way too weird when i politely asked the mak cik to please separately pack the ingredients of my nasi lemak..
"mak cik.. boleh asingkan sambal, timun, nasi dan ayam tak?"
"kenapa?"
"err.. untuk kerja rumah.."
"kerja rumah?? kamu ni belajar doctor ke?"
"tak lar.. pemakanan.."
"ooo.. pemakanan.. lepas tu kena kira berapa lemak yang ada dalam makanan ke.."
and i had to stand there hearing the mak cik talking about her views of "pemakanan"
and had to endure the stall worker giving me annoyed faces because it caused him more work..

the gross part is when i ate nasi goreng ayam kunyit..
lucky i was clever enough to ask the mak cik to separate the nasi goreng and the ayam..
but i still had to pick out every single ingredient and weigh them..
and mix them back together after all the weighing.. totally gross!

omg!! high cholesterol..

food preparation practicals.. the stuff we do when we're bored..

and the Ramadhan month has begun..
went to the bazaar ramadhan in Sg Besi for the 1st time since i've been here..
and it was spectacular!!
the crowd..
the heat..
especially the extremely not-good-for-your-health foods.. *winks*

after one of our trips to the bazaar ramadhan..

well what's next?

and a whole stack of notes reminding me of how much i have to study for EOS..

after weeks weeks of planning and preparations..
it's finally here..
the IMU 慈青迎新茶会!!
yes.. i am part of the IMU Tzu-Chi Collegiate Youth Association..
in fact.. i am one of the 干部..
pretty unbelievable right?

back to the topic.. it was held in 鸿图园共修处, which is situated in Kuchai Lama..
had to rush there right after Anthropometry SCL..
phew.. luckily i was in time..
got to taste some really great vegetarian bak-kut-teh *mental note: must get the recipe from 师姑*
and the people started arriving...

meal time..

games... the game for the day was 七手八脚..
where they were divided into groups and each group have to complete a task given by the emcee..
who knew IMU students were such acrobats.. XD

the poses they managed to perform.. amazing!

then there was and introduction to 慈济 by 传溢学长..
and also video presentations of 慈济医疗志业 & 共创幸福校园..
besides that.. there was also a short sketch on IMU慈青 activities..

of practicals and class tests..

it's really crazy for me these days..
let's see.. my time table is actually getting on my nerves..
classes starting at 8am.. and 4 out of 5 afternoons are filled with practicals...
Food Preparation.. Microbiology.. Nutrition Assessment..
i really don't know which is more tiring..

(a) standing for 3 hours in the ND kitchen..
belief me.. kneading the yeast bread dough for 30mins is definitely no fun at all!
but i guess it turned out ok.. so that's not exactly a bad thing afterall..
it is very energy-consuming.. but i kinda enjoyed the evaluation and tasting part.. =D

(b) looking at microbes through a microscope and having to endure the extremely strong smell of E coli..
ewww.... E coli makes me sick!! i can't stand it anymore..
and squinting at the microscope trying to describe the microbes' appearence is definitely not my favourite way to pass time..
lucky for me.. we are clear of microbiology lab sessions in the coming week.. yippie..
i don't hate microbiology.. but i seriously can't help scratching my head, confused, when the lecturer starts blabbing on the different drug and anti-biotics/anti-fungal treatment.. i mean.. it's not even supposed to be my area of expertise isn't it?

or
(c) being subject/measurer/recorder in anthropometry class..
well.. this is something i enjoy i guess.. landmarking and measuring..
but it does drain me of my energy..
and the frustration of not gettting the readings between 0.2mm for skinfold... arrrgggghhhh!
why am i feeling that i might not pass the skinfold part??
fingers crossed.. i hope i get all the landmarks, positions and readings correct for the practical exam..
anyone else volunteers to be my subject??? i still need more practice... pretty please??

feeling more and more tired these days.. and yet, i still have to force open my eyes to stay awake in lectures..
and.. i have 2 class tests coming up next week...
omg.... Principles of Food Preparation & Pathophysiology and Clinical Management of Diseases..
can i have extra 48 hours????
so many more lectures to go through... so little time left...
and again.. i have my food preparation practical report dued monday...
i guess i'd better get started on the report..

As the first activity after our recent Recruitment Drive, the society will be organizing our first gathering for the second half of 2009.

It has been our tradition of our society to welcome our new members as well as to reunite our current members into a gathering for the sole reason of Fellowship. We have arrange a range of fun-filled activities for everyone to get to know the society's activities, workings and also to help to create a bond between members, a bond of Friendship.

This gathering will be held on 31 July (Friday) from 1.15pm to 2.15pm (Friday Prayers Time), so please have your meal before we begin and try to be punctual. For more information, please contact Sis. Mar-Jie at 016-3966022.

Treasure Hunt..

treasure hunt was a mess..
1st.. there were all these similar colours for different groups.. and people keep taking clues that were not theirs..
2nd.. i can't belief they actually placed the wrong clue at the wrong place.. and they even accused us for not following the clues.. zzz..
well, after we sorted out things, they let us proceed.. sorry if we seemed frustrated and unpleasant.. i sincerely apologize for my bad temper that may have caused uncomfortable exchanges with the committee..
well, the great news was, it was all a mess and they just let the group who finds the treasure 1st win.. in this case, our group!!
hahahaha.. yes, we found it, we found it!! we won!!!!

Finale Nite..

it was down to the last event of the orientation..
and i'm exhausted.. besides waking up late and missing dr Tony's lecture.. and struggling to keep my eyes open during lectures..
we still had to help the juniors in their final task.. which is the Project Runway..
they were given 2 white t-shirts, and they had to come up with a design and model it..
it was amazing really, u guys did a great job.. even with limited time, u did it~
i'd have to say.. this new batch of students are soooo talented in fashion design..
looking at all the amazing designs the juniors came up with.. wow.. we really salute u guys =P
highlight of the night.. the Juniors' Project Runway..
surprise of the night.. definitely goes to B107'd show.. omg!! u guys really had the nerves to do that.. i'd rather not comment on it.. let's just say it was "interesting".. hahahaha...
my preferred performances.. Chris's chinese flute solo, Georgen's "Heaven Knows", Georgen + AiLing's "一眼瞬间", BP108 + ND108's combined dance.. u guys rock~! =)

not forgetting.. we won the best cheer prize~~~
hahaha.. really excited when we were announced the winner for best cheer..

had fun chilling and hanging out with everyone..

Variety Nite..
it was the moment of the truth..
all our disasterous dance rehersals.. we've finally made it to the night..
rushed home straight after class, got a shower, grabbed my stuff and headed to WenYi's house..
and the makeover session begun..
special thanks to my "make-up artists" -- JiaRu and YingLu..
i've never been the kind that even knows how to apply eyeshadow or mascara..
not to mention.. all the foundation and blusher thingy..
all these sound so alien to me..
okok.. i know.. pretty weak for a girl right..
maybe i'll get someone to teach me.. *note:have to get someone with extreme patience*
anyway.. i salute those who can make up on their own.. it's like such a complicated project going on.. =)

well well.. back to the topic..
then we gathered in the dance studio, going thru the routine one last time..
and before we knew it.. it was nearly time..
went to check on our group's junior..
and to see if they need any help in their costumes..
did i mention we got SPONGEBOB as our theme?
why o why do we have to get something that is not even human?
well.. they did great.. with the help of us OOs of course.. =P
let's see.. we have Spongebob, Patrick, Mr Krabs, Larry the Lobster, Plankton, Mrs Puff, Jellyfish, Sandy, Gary the snail and of course.. Squidward~
they all looked so cute!

and the emcees went on stage, and started the night.. with some "banana dance"..
quite lame actually.. but i guess the juniors enjoyed it?
it was time.. we (ND108) kicked start the Variety Nite with out welcoming dance..
starting with Mona.. with her solo indian dance..
following by Bleeding Love and Don't Stop the Music..
and to think of it.. how come time flies by when u're on stage..
it's like we've been practicing forever, and suddenly we've finished performing..
hope everyone enjoyed it~

and being the typical member of N&D, our photo-session went on and on throughout the night..
not that we're not paying attention to the performance of the juniors of course..
to tell the truth.. this batch of juniors was more creative than i thought..
everyone had came up with such realistic costumes.. *thumbs up!*
it was quite a long night though..
waited and waited with an empty stomach for our group's turn..
and when it's finally over..
a few of us went out for our late dinner.. or should i say.. supper..
but i missed the indian dance performance by psychology & nursing..
sorry u guys.. sorry Yan.. u know i support u right? is there any possibility of a replay? *just kidding*
sorry again ya.. for missing it..

Station Games - the Battle between Survivors and Natives..

it's day two of orientation activities..
and it's the routine station games day..
without the usual flour, mud water and running around in the Komanwel Park..
i cant belief they did find a substitute -- lipstick, water colour and glitter...
and belief me.. running all around IMU is no easy task either..
i mean.. we've got to run from the atrium >> 2nd floor >> car park >> 4th floor... and belief me, the list goes on..
but seriously i totally salute the gals of Beh-Tahan.. and of course.. not to forget, the only guy -- Ken..
u guys make a great team.. BEH-TAHAN rawks~~!!

and the orientation begins..
there was the usual briefing on the 1st evening..
this year's theme is " LOST "
i'm OO (Orientation Officer) for group 4..
and we are the BEH-TAHANs..
omg.. what a name..
well well well.. interesting anyway..
only one guy turned up for the briefing.. oh no..
the other were all girls..
but the group actually turned out pretty well..
i grew to love them!

orientation this year wasn't going to be similar as the previous years..
for one thing.. as a safety precaution against H1N1..
all orientation activities will only begin during week 1..
and.. there will be no outdoor activities..
no cheering in IMU..
no water.. no flour.. no extreme physical activity..
i guess it really is a challenge to the committee to actually organize an orientation with all these restrictions..
but they did their best.. so.. good job u guys..
anyway.. there was the usual signature hunt..
which.. of course.. includes silly tasks.. singing, dancing, pulling hairs, acting..
basically entertaining the "seniors" and "committees" to get their very precious signature..

Senior-Junior Nite..
this was the first time we got to meet our juniors..
well.. they looked a nice lot..
the seniors had fun.. maybe it's only us who are syok-sendiri-ing..
but we really welcome all of you to our great big family of ND~
compliments to Georgen.. for the wonderful wonderful welcome video..
same goes to everyone of ND108.. who helped out in the registration, food, games..
thank you seniors.. and also juniors.. for making it a successful night..
i beg your pardon.. if there was any flaws or discomfort that night..
and it's picture time again!

i was talking to a person the other day, and the person agrees with me..
we can all feel our batch coming together..
we were all once different individuals..
all the unfamiliar faces.. unknown background..
as the semesters goes along.. we all got to know each other..
and with every incident or event we've been thru together..
we're bonded more closely to each other..
ND108 unite~! i love all of u ya..

Primary School + Secondary School Gathering..
met up with some old friends on saturday..
ZheXin, Justin, Timothy and Michelle's back in the country~
headed towards Midvalley for dinner at Italiannies~
had to squeeze and push my way against the crazy fans of Manchester United that was all heading towards Stadium Bukit Jalil.. and endure a freaking torturing ride in KTM *which reminds me, never ever agree to go to midvalley unless it's by car!*
after a pleasant dinner in Italiannies, we headed towards our next destination.. Murni's at SS2.. where more of us turned up..

i actually enjoyed the gathering..
though not many showed up..
and the fact that i'm totally exhausted..
but it really brings back all the memories..
it felt good to hang out and talk about the old times..
the silly stuff we did in primary school..
who had a crush on who..
who used to be the teachers' pet..
who sat next to whom..
omg.. can't belief we can really recall that much!
looking forward to the next gathering.. =)
but seriously, next time, perhaps less eating! wakakaka...

oh ya! spotted some really cute monsters around MidValley..
could stop myself from snapping pictures of them =P
